First Courses in Data Analytics. Students interested in pursuing the Data Analytics major are encouraged to take COMP 141 (Programming Fundamentals) and an introductory statistics course (MATH 211 or ECON 290 or PSYC 211) during their first year. If a student has a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Computer Science A exam, they should start with DATA 242 (Program Design and Data Structures for Data Analytics; see description below). If a student has a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam, they should start with MATH 212 (Applied Regression). If a student has credit for both COMP 141 and MATH 211, the student is encouraged to take DATA 244 (Introduction to Data Analytics; see description below) in their first year. Each concentration within Data Analytics also has courses appropriate for first-year students:
- Students interested in the Anthropology and Sociology concentration are encouraged to take ANSO 103 (Introductory Anthropology) or ANSO 105 (Introductory Sociology) in their first year.
- Students interested in concentrations in Accounting, Finance, Managements, Marketing, or Economics are encouraged to take ECON 100 (Introduction to Economics) in their first year.
- Students interested in the Environmental Studies and Sciences concentration are encouraged to take ENVS 150 (Environment and Society) in their first year.
- Students interested in the Health Equity concentration are encouraged to take HLEQ 210 (Introduction to Health Equity) in their first year.
- Students interested in the International Studies concentration are encouraged to take INTS 110 (Introduction to International Relations) or INTS 120 (Introduction to Comparative Politics) in their first year.
- Students interested in the Psychology concentration are encouraged to take PSYC 150 (Introduction to Psychological Science) in their first year.
- Students interested in the Urban Studies concentration are encouraged to take URBN 201 (Introduction to Urban Studies) in their first year.
Internship Opportunities. Data Analytics majors will have opportunities for summer internship where they are able to apply their studies in a professional setting, and gain experience and perspective in how companies and non-profit organizations collect and utilize data.
Descriptions of data analytics courses:
- DATA 242: Program Design and Data Structures for Data Analytics
This course will look at data structures and their associated algorithms applied to computational problems. Topics include data structures and algorithms; abstraction; time and memory complexity; recursion; dynamic memory structures; sorting and searching; advanced programming and problem-solving strategies; efficient software library use.
Prerequisites: COMP 141
- DATA 244: Introduction to Data Analytics
Data analytics is an emerging field with skills applicable to a wide variety of disciplines. This course is an introduction to analysis, computation, and presentation concerns through the investigation of data driven puzzles. Topics include data collection and integration, exploratory data analysis, data manipulation and presentation, dimensionality reduction, effective communication, and ethical considerations regarding privacy and control of big data. (Cross-listed as MATH 244)
Prerequisites: COMP 141 and MATH 211, PSYC 211, or ECON 290
Upper-Level Courses:
- DATA 344: Advanced Methods in Data Analytics
This course will examine both supervised and unsupervised machine learning models. Students will develop an understanding of the cutting-edge methods and algorithms of data analytics and how they can be used to answer questions about real-world problems. Topics include optimization, dimensionality reduction, clustering, classification, qualitative data analysis, and network analysis. (Cross-listed as COMP 344/MATH 344)
Prerequisites: DATA 242 and (DATA 244 or COMP 241) and (MATH 212 or ECON 420)
- DATA 486 (4 credits): Data Analytics Senior Seminar
This course comprises an in-depth exploration of the principles and techniques of data analytics. Students will complete projects based on proposals completed in DATA 344 applying data analytics techniques to real world data related to their internship experiences and the application domains pursued via their concentration requirements. The Senior Seminar is meant to emphasize the unity and power of data analytics by applying and extending ideas drawn from the courses required for all Data Analytics majors. All participants will make several oral presentations.
Prerequisites: DATA 344
